Abstract

Introduction: Greenhouses are a suitable environment for the growth of many agricultural crops, but on the other hand, they consume a lot of agricultural pesticides, which may affect human and animal health. Aim of the study: studying teratogenesis of some greenhouse pesticides (copper oxychloride and chlorfenapyr in albino rats. Materials and methods : Through administration of copper oxychloride and chlorfenapyr in different doses orally to female rats during pregnancy and lactation, then taking blood samples and also measuring the biochemical changes responsible for metabolism and liver and kidney functions, besides measuring oxidative stress and antioxidants in the liver tissue then finally measuring pathology and cytological changes in mothers and fetuses. Results: The results showed that copper oxychloride and chlorfenapyr led to some fetal abnormalities in albino rat’s embryos with impaired liver and kidney function and significant oxidative stress in the hepatic tissue, in addition to the occurrence of many pathological and cellular changes in pregnant and lactating females. Discussion: The study demonstrated the toxicity and teratogenicity of some greenhouse pesticides (copper oxychloride and chlorfenapyr) in fetuses, pregnant and lactating female albino rats Recommendations: Banning the usage of these pesticides in greenhouse crops with strict legislative laws to protect farmers and consumers of these crops. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are also advised not to be exposed to these pesticides during pregnancy and lactation. This study also suggests not spraying both pesticides together in addition to encouraging a culture of health education for greenhouse farmers.
