Abstract

At the last few decades, many attempts have been made to reduce the own weight of the steel elements used in bridges, as well as reducing the cost of construction. One attempt is to use tapered (i.e. non-prismatic with varying depth) steel plate girders with corrugated webs (TPGCWS). The corrugated steel plates are used as structural elements in many structural applications because of their many favourable properties compared with flat plates. Moreover, they have been used due to their aesthetical appearance, especially in the case of TPGCWs. A lot of research has been made to study the shear behaviour of TPGCWS for the case of simple girder, to the author’s knowledge, the shear behaviour of TPGCWS for the case of continuous girder has never been studied. So, the main target of this thesis is to study the shear behaviour of TPGCWS for the case of continuous girder. Two experimental models have been tested to verify the results of existing design equations. Moreover, an elastic bifurcation buckling analysis is carried out in this thesis for continuous tapered plate girders with corrugated webs by using ABAQUS computer package. The corrugated webs considered herein have practical dimensions like those of the available bridges with corrugated webs. The critical shear buckling stresses of the corrugated webs obtained from the finite element analysis are compared with the available shear buckling stresses formula. As a result of this research, a modification is made to the available shear buckling stresses formula to provide more accurate results. Moreover, the methodology of this research also depends mainly on experimental events and theoretical analyses on small scale continuous tapered plate girders with corrugated webs.
