Abstract Bacterial vaginosis is the most commonly reported microbiological syndrome affecting millions of women of childbearing age. Bacterial vaginosis is characterized by a shift in the vaginal microbiome from the dominant Lactobacillus to a polymicrobial dysbiosis, which involves multiple bacterial species that may vary from patient to patient Bacterial vaginosis increases risk for community-acquired pelvic inflammatory disease and chronic endometritis. Bacterial vaginosis infection before cesarean delivery has also been associated with increased risk of postpartum endometritis. Also many studies have found an association between BV during pregnancy and all major adverse pregnancy outcomes (preterm labor, preterm delivery, low birth weight, premature rupture of membranes, postpartum metritis, intra-amniotic infection). This was a quasi-experimental study study of 48 women with uncomplicated singleton pregnancy from whom vaginal swab was obtained at the start of the study and before and after treatment with oral lactoferrin 200mg once daily, using mamy vital sachets,from second and third trimester of pregnancy till delivary for the assessment of presence of bacterial vaginosis according to AMSEL’s criteria in order to evaluate the effectiveness of administration of oral lactoferrin as an oral iron supplement in treatment of bacterial vaginosis during pregnancy and decreasing the incidence of preterm labor and other complications related to bacterial vaginosis in pregnancy. |
