Abstract

The enhanced recovery after surgery concept emerged as a multimodal approach directed at optimizing the patient experience, standardizing perioperative care, and improving surgical outcomes. Aim: -this study aimed to evaluate the effect of enhanced recovery pathway for women undergoing hysterectomy operation in Suez Canal University Hospital and General Hospital in Ismailia City. Design: - A quasi-experimental study design was used in this study. Sample: - convenient sample of 132 women undergoing hysterectomy operation. Tools : - Include four tools, structured interviewing questionnaire included items about pre- and post- operative intervention and pain measurement scale, recovery process assessment record and follow up assessment checklist. Results: - the women in study group had less mean score of pain during first, second and third day in post-operative period compared to those in control group (2.53±.50 vs 2.69±.46 respectively). Mean duration of hospitalization in the study group was significantly shorter than those in control group (3.46±.86 vs 5.07±1.61 respectively). The women in the study group were less likely to suffer from complications as fever and vaginal prolapse and pneumothorax compared to those in control group. Differences observed are statistically significant P=(.023, .049, .004). Women in study group were more likely to have lesser mean time of first defecation after operation compared to control group (10.07±4.15 vs 21.16±8.90 hours). Differences observed are statistically significant P=.000. Conclusion: The result of the study concluded that women in the study group more likely to recover early, where they had early intestinal movement, less pain and had shorter period of hospital stay as well as decreasing post-operative complications than women who didn’t. Recommendation: - Enhanced recovery pathway for hysterectomy management should be impelemented in postoperative management protocol at health care setting.
