Abstract

Summary
This study was conducted in the Department of Vascular Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Tanta University. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy was introduced at Department of Physical Medicine, Rheumatology and Rehabilitation in Tanta University Teaching Hospital during the period from September 2017 to December 2019.
In this study, the treatment of hyperbaric oxygen was carried out by the patient breathing oxygen 100% pure in a closed chamber under pressure 1-3 absolute atmospheric pressure.
This study included 20 patients (15 males) 75% and (5 females) 25% with active chronic venous leg ulcer from the lower extremities for a period of between 1 and 8 years which has been under various lines of management without response. After adequate debridement of necrotic tissues under local anesthesia, and irrigation with saline solution until it was clean. Patients were appointed to one of the following two groups.
group (A): Use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (10 cases). One session was applied day after day and the number of sessions ranged (20 - 40) depending on the progress. The duration of the session is one hour.
group (B): Use of compression therapy alone (10 cases). Regular or multi-compression stockings were used till ulcer healing occurred. If complete healing occurs, the compression was maintained by using elastic stockings.
