Abstract

Background: Laryngeal cancer (LC) is the second most common cancer of the head and neck after skin cancer (1). The disease is accounted for approximately 30 to 40 % of all head and neck malignancies and 1 to 2.5 % of all malignancies in the human body (2). The pathological type of the tumor in the majority of cases is squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) (more than 90 %) (3). Aim of the Work: To study the failure rate (local and/or regional recurrence) in carcinoma of larynx following treatment with conservative radiation or chemo radiation and to evaluate & asses risk factors of loco-regional recurrence after conservative radiation therapy or chemo radiation in laryngeal cancer. Patients and Methods: In this retrospective study, during the period from January 2015 to December 2018, a total of 62 patients were diagnosed as laryngeal SCC and were eligible for analysis. The study took place at Head & Neck unit, Clinical oncology & nuclear medicine department. The median age of patients at time of diagnosis was 61years ranging from 43 to 84 years. Fifty-six patients (90.3%) were males, whereas 6 patients (9.7%) were females. Fifty patients (80.6%) had ECOG 1 at time of diagnosis and 12 patients (19.3%) had ECOG 2 at time of diagnosis.
Conclusion: New CRT strategies are offered as alternative treatment options to improve quality of life for patients with laryngeal cancer in the form of laryngeal preservation. The discussion about laryngeal preservation remains a controversial issue because its benefits should be well balanced with cancer control and possible adverse events.
