Terms of the search:
The following terms were defined operationally: Speech Program, Early Intervention, Verbal Communication, Quality of Life, and Autism Disorder.
Search parameters:
That research is determined according to the following limitations:
1- Timing determinants: The research was conducted during the academic year (2019-2020), where parents were trained to implement the communicative program with their children for a period of 6 months during the period from 9/1/2019 to 2/29/2020, according to a weekly session. Parents of their children on the program for a full year from 1/9/2019 to 31/8/2020 AD, in addition to the follow-up period that lasted one month from 9/1/2020 AD to 9/30/2020 AD.
2- Spatial determinants: The research was conducted in Beni Suef governorate, and parents were trained to implement program sessions with their children at the Alwan Center for Communication and Day Care in Beni Suef.
3- Human determinants: The human determinants of the research (his sample) consisted of 8 fathers of autistic children and 6 autistic children. 3 males and 3 females, ranging in age from 3 to 6 years.
4- Methodological determinants: It is represented in the approach that was used, as the research relied on the experimental method for its relevance to its procedures, and the design of the one-group sample was chosen. where the pre and post measurements were taken to test the growth and development of verbal communication, and the measure of quality of life for families of autistic children, and to monitor the improvement in the results of the post measurement.
Tools of the study:
The current research used the following tools to achieve its objectives:
A- The Gilliam Scale - Third Edition (Prepared by James Gilliam, translated and codified by Sameh Arafa).
B- The list of criteria for the DSM-5 (prepared by APA, translated by the researcher).
C- A form for disclosing the final research sample (prepared by the researcher).
of its techniques on the development of social communication in these children.
B- The study clarified, through the program presented by it, the clear practical principles for how to prepare an early intervention program for children with autism disorder. This is to achieve real benefit from the importance of rapid and early therapeutic intervention, its procedural steps, and how to plan and implement it with these children.
C- The study also provided the procedural foundations for how parents can fully participate in the implementation of rehabilitation programs for their children with autism, and the practical definition of their role that they are required to play in those family programs, and a clear definition of the role of the specialist as a trainer and guide for parents in implementing the program goals.
D- The study examined an important variable, which is the “psychological quality of life of families of autistic children” related to the improvement of their abilities to “verbal communication” - which is the first and most important variable given that it is considered to be the main problem and the biggest challenge for an autistic child - through a number of important measures presented by the study to measure these two The two variables.
Hypotheses of the search:
- The first hypothesis: There are statistically significant differences between the mean ranks of the household scores of the study sample in the pre and post measurements on a test that tracks the growth and development of verbal communication for an autistic child in favor of the post measurement.
- The second hypothesis: There are statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the families of the study sample in the pre and post measures on the quality of life scale for families of children with autism in favor of the post measurement.
- The third hypothesis: There are no statistically significant differences between the mean ranks of the degrees of families of the children of the study sample in the post and tracer measurements on a test that tracks the growth and development of verbal communication of an autistic child.
- The fourth hypothesis: There are no statistically significant differences between the mean ranks of the household scores of the children of the study sample in the post and tracer measures on the quality of life scale for families of children with autism.
Importance of the search:
The importance of this search can be determined in its theoretical and practical sides as follows:
1- theoretical significance:
A- The study represents an attempt to enrich the Arab library in the field of ”autism”; The disorder is widespread, and its causes and ways to treat it remain unclear. Therefore, we still need more studies to know the best ways to rehabilitate and help children with it.
B- The study dealt with the problem of ”verbal communication deficiency”, which is one of the most prominent and complex problems of the autistic child, and the effect on its compatibility with his community, and the impact on the quality of life of his family.
C- The study examined the effect of the proposed program on ”the quality of the psychological life of families of autistic children” in connection with the improvement of their children’s abilities to communicate verbally with them and their social environment; This effect is very related, complex and difficult to measure, which requires special measurement tools to research this special and interlocking relationship.
D- The study sheds light on “the importance of early intervention in verbal rehabilitation for autistic children,” which is a very important issue and has an impact on improving the condition of these children and achieving the desired effectiveness of the programs designed to rehabilitate them.
E- The study also indicated the importance of family therapy or family programs, such programs that only the specialist plans with the guardian, and the parent participates in their full implementation and becomes the biggest role for him in training his child, which limits the role of the specialist in favor of strengthening the role of the father, and makes The specialist is only a mentor and a follow-up to the parent and a facilitator to implement the program goals.
2- Application importance:
A- The study presented a communicative program that relies on its rehabilitative techniques on the evolutionary model Son Rise, a model whose effectiveness has not been scientifically proven yet, as the studies conducted on it differed about its effectiveness in achieving the goals of communication and social interaction in children with autism spectrum disorder, and thus There becomes an urgent need to investigate its effectiveness and the impact
parents and their effective participation in providing rehabilitation programs and services for their children, not to rely on the one-way role of the specialist or the caregiver within rehabilitation centers and institutions only, and to delegate the responsibility of rehabilitating the autistic child only to the specialist. Follower. Rather, the emphasis has become on the need to involve parents mainly in providing rehabilitation service for the child, and for the parents to have the biggest role in implementing rehabilitation programs as they are the most interacting with the child for longer periods of time throughout the day.
Based on the foregoing, the problem of the current search is summarized in answering the following main question:
What is the impact of the proposed speech program based on early intervention in improving verbal communication for children with autism? and What is the impact of this program on the quality of the life of their families?
from this main question, the following two sub-questions are divided:
A- Are there differences between the average grades of the children of the study sample in the pre and post measures on the test of tracking the growth and development of verbal communication of the autistic child, and on the scale of quality of life among families of children with autism?
B- Are there differences between the average grades of the children of the study sample in the post and tracer measures on the test of tracking the growth and development of verbal communication of the autistic child, and on the measure of quality of life among families of children with autism?
Objectives of the study:
The current search aimed to achieve the following:
1- Improving the verbal communication of the secondary research sample (children with autism) by using the proposed speech program based on early intervention.
2- Improving the quality of life for the basic research sample (families of autistic children) using the program.
3- Identifying the extent of the continuity of the program’s impact after the completion of its implementation and after the follow-up period has passed.
Research indicates that therapeutic interventions implemented with autistic children before their fifth birthday are more effective and more effective in their development and improvement. Research also indicates that parents’ intervention and participation in early rehabilitation of their children contributes better to achieving the desired improvement than if it were done in isolation from them. This is because parents are in an important position to enhance their children’s ability to learn and to continue to stimulate interaction with their children at home.
This led to the development of several programs for early rehabilitation and therapeutic intervention for autistic children that depend on parents in their implementation, among which comes the attempt presented by the current study to provide an early intervention program for verbal communication rehabilitation that depends entirely on parents in its implementation; With the aim of improving the ability of autistic children to verbal communication, and thus improving the quality of life of their families.
Problem of the search:
The problem of the absence of verbal language for an autistic child is one of the most prominent problems of this child that affects his ability to communicate and social interaction with his family and with his social environment, and which also affects the quality of the psychological life of the parents of this child as they are most affected by the delay in his condition and the deterioration of various aspects of his development and their inability to find A sound verbal communication language with him.
The problem of delaying the provision of rehabilitation intervention services for the child, and thus delaying his treatment journey, is one of the most common causes of the deterioration of his condition, as many other symptoms appear that are more difficult to treat; This makes the therapeutic intervention later in life much less effective than if it were done early. Therefore, most of the international institutions concerned with the issues of autistic children have tended to advocate and emphasize the necessity of detection, diagnosis, and early start of the journey of treatment and rehabilitative and therapeutic intervention with these children to ensure that they benefit from rehabilitation programs and ensure the improvement and targeted development of their cases.
It is also evident now that there is an international trend among those bodies and institutions to agree and affirm the strengthening of the role of
Summary of the study
An introduction:
Autism is one of the disorders of comprehensive developmental development that affects children in early childhood, specifically in the first three years of their lives, affecting several areas of development, most notably the growth of the ability to social interaction and language communication, with no compensation for trying to communicate in any other way other than verbal, This is accompanied by the emergence of several stereotypical behaviors repeatedly, with limited interests and the presence of emotional and emotional rigidity; This is according to the latest diagnostic criteria defined by the American Psychiatric Association in 2013 in the DSM-5.
However, lack of linguistic communication remains one of the most prominent symptoms of this disorder and one of the most important criteria for its diagnosis, so that autism has been considered one of the stages of its diagnosis historically within the framework of communication disorders. The inability to verbal communication with others is one of the basic features of autistic children, as they suffer from the difficulty of verbal expression that is socially engaged in communicating and interacting with others, and most of them need help at the beginning of their lives to develop their expressive language skills, as a large percentage of them remain without contact with others throughout Their lives unless they are trained to communicate.
The issue of early intervention with autistic children is one of the most prominent issues of these children, which today has become of great concern locally and globally, and there are trends that are increasing daily with the necessity of early detection of this disorder, and rapid curative intervention with these children once they are diagnosed to ensure the improvement of their conditions and the alleviation of their symptoms. For a curative or rehabilitative intervention to be effective, it should start early, once the child is diagnosed. This is because early detection of the disorder and the initiative to implement an appropriate rehabilitation program with the child provides more effective opportunities to improve his condition and reduce the severity of the symptoms he shows, and on the contrary, delaying treatment with him leads to a deterioration of his condition, an increase in the severity of symptoms, or the emergence of other symptoms that limit Effectiveness of intervention programs.
