Abstract

Bipolar Disorder (BD) tends to be one of the most chronic, sever and relapsing disorder among psychiatric disorders. These patients experience high level of relapse and admitting to psychiatric hospital. This disorder is still considered as one of the leading cause of death, morbidity and malfunctioning among afflicted individuals. The study aims to assess the relationship between insight, social support, medication adherence and its relevance to relapse among patients with bipolar disorder. Method: A descriptive correlational research design was utilized with a sample of 200 patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder attending the Inpatient and the Out-patient clinics of Psychiatric Department of Mansoura University Hospital. Data was collected using four tools: tool to assess socio-demographic characteristics and clinical data, Schedule for Assessment of Insight-Expanded version (SAI-E), Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) and Drug Attitude Inventory -10 Scale (DAI-10) (shortened version). Results revealed that that more than half of the studied sample who experience low and moderate social support had poor insight, more than two thirds of the studied sample who were not adherent to medication had low and moderate social support and arround two thirds of the studied sample who were not adherent to medication had poor insight. There was highly positive significant correlation between medication adherence and insight. Patients who had poor insight, low and moderate social support and non-adherent to medication admitted to the hospital from 5 to 10 times and more. There was no significant relation between them. Conclusion: It can be concluded from the present study that lack of insight, low social support and non-adherence to medication increase the risk for relapse among patients with bipolar disorder. Recommendations: Psycho educational program is needed to improve insight, social support and medication adherence among patients with bipolar disorder.
