Abstract

Background: Chemotherapy-induced stomatitis is one of the most frequent and serious complications that negatively affect children’s quality of life. Therefore, the use of pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods of treating oral mucositis is critical to improving the nutritional status and quality of life of children undergoing chemotherapy. Aim: This study aimed to examine effectiveness of flavored oral cryotherapy versus mouthwash on the prevention and management of stomatitis induced by chemotherapy. Method: A quasi-experimental, non-equivalent groups research design was conducted on a purposive sample of 69 children with cancer and undergoing chemotherapy who attended to outpatient clinics and in-patient pediatric oncology department in Oncology Center at Mansoura University (OCMU). Tools: A structural interview questionnaire related to children’ characteristics, clinical data, oral health status and oral assessment guide (OAG). Results More than one quarter and and less than two third respectively of children in flavored cryotherapy and chlorohexidine groups develop sever stomatitis at 14th day, while all of them in both intervention group had healthy oral cavity on the same day. Conclusion: Using only flavored oral cryotherapy led to healthier oral mucosa and lower stomatitis score compared to using only mouthwash (chlorhexidine), as well as, using flavored oral cryotherapy and chlorhexidine together lead to healthier oral mucosa and the lowest score of oral stomatitis compared to children using only one method. Recommendations: Provide in-services, up to date, regular training programs to improve nurses’ knowledge and practices regarding the use of flavored cryotherapy and mouthwashes as routine care for children treated with chemotherapy Further studies are recommended to repeat this study on a larger sample size and on a wide scale in various governorates of Egypt.
