Abstract

Quaternary Amine and polyethylene glycol compounds were investigated as corrosion inhibitors for Brass in 3% NaCl solution using potentiodynamic polarization technique. The metal surfaces with and without inhibitor have been characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). Results showed that the two compounds are good inhibitors for the corrosion of brass in 3% NaCl solution by forming a protective film on the metal surface. Inhibition efficiency increased by increasing concentration up to 250 and 200 ppm for Quaternary Amine and Polyethylene glycol, respectively, then decreased slightly. The values of activation energy and the enthalpy were calculated. Surface analysis shows the existence of inhibitor molecules on the metal surface and formation of a layer containing Copper Azide and Zinc Chloride Hydroxide compounds which supports the obtained results.
