Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of (turmeric and honey) on impaired liver in rats injected with Carbon Tetrachloride (CCl4) in paraffin oil (1:1) (2 ml ∕ kg B. Wt twice a week for 2 weeks. Forty mature albino rats, weighing 150 ±5g were divided into 2main groups, the first group (5 rats) still fed on basal diet and the second main group (35 rats) had given CCl4 twice a week for 15 days to induce liver impaired in rats, then classified into 7 groups (5 rats in each group) one of them left as control +ve, and the other 6 groups. G3 &G4 fed on (turmeric) at percent of 0.5 and 1.5, G5 &G6 fed on (honey) at percent of 5 and7.5 and G7&G8 fed on (mixture) at percent of 5 and7.5 mg ∕ kg B. Wt from the basal diet for 28 days. Body weight, feed efficiency ratio, feed intake, relative organs weight, glucose, serum liver function (GOT,GPT and ALP), T.G,T.C, LDL, HDL,VLDL, AI, kidney functions ( uric acid, urea and creatinine) and histopathological changes of liver and kidney have been evaluated . The obtained results of hepatic rats revealed that honey and turmeric showed a significant increase in weight gain, feed efficiency ratio, feed intake and HDL, but with significant decreases in the rest of the analyses referred to previously, as compared with control (+ve) group.
In conclusion, the study recommended using Turmeric and Honey in our daily diets to improve the liver functions.
Key words: Liver functions, curcumin, Lipid profiles, Histopathological changes.
