Abstract

GERD occurs as a result of failure of antireflux mechanisms of oesophagus. The most common factor that determine it is lower oesophageal sphincter and the ability of oesophagus to expel any refluxate back to stomach which is dependent on oesophageal peristaltic function (oesophageal clearance). The typical manifestation of GERD include: Heartburn and acid regurgitation. The oesophageal acid exposure results in development of reflux oesophagitis. In this study we tried to determine the relationship between GERD and cardiac involvement. 50 patients with GERD symptoms were subjected to: History and clinical examination. Routine investigations. Ambulatory 24 hours oesophageal PH monitoring. 24 hours ECG monitoring (Holter). The patients enrolled in the current work were 25 males (50%) and 25 females (50%).44% of patients were smokers and 56% were non smokers. Their ages ranged from 26 to 58 years. As regard comorbid diseases 44% were diabetic and 38% were hypertensive. By 24 hours oesophageal PH monitoring there is positive relationship between smoking and reflux episodes. There is also positive relationship between DM and reflux episodes. By the 24 hours ECG monitoring (Holter) there is relationship between occurance of arrhythmia and occurance of reflux episodes.
