Abstract

Nanotechnology is a new field of research being studied by many scientists around the world. It is a new industrial revolution that will encompass all areas of life. Nanotechnology is the science of modifying molecules or atoms to make new products or solve existing problems. This thesis represents a new approach in the treatment of transformer oil using nanotechnology. It is a practical application for the using of this technique, starting from the preparation of the nano oil and enhancing its properties to the improvement of electrical insulation properties of a transformer prototype. Also, nanotechnology was used to improve the electrical insulation properties of an aged current transformer used in the high voltage field at a voltage of 66 kV. After the process of treatment with nanotechnology, the insulation properties have been improved significantly. Then, the thesis moved to the other side of the nanotechnology application in the treatment of electric circuit breakers. The main problem of circuit breakers is high contact resistance due to repeated separation and conduction, where carbonization appears on the contact points reducing the conductivity. Usually, operators deal with this problem by abrasion the contact points and then restarting them. This process is inefficient and in the short term a complete destruction of the electric circuit breaker occurs. This process led to two problems, reducing the thickness of the contact points and forming a gap between these points, which results in the appearance of an electric arc that leads to a damage of the electric circuit breaker. The molded case circuit breaker was out of service because of its low contact resistance. It was treated using nano-oil and under the influence of infrared radiation for the purpose of hunting carbon atoms and without dismantling electrical equipment parts.Abstract iii The electrical tests showed the improvement in the quality of the connection, so the process was done without any decomposition of parts. This experience has also been used in the field of high voltage by improving the maintenance of tap changers using nanotechnology. Nanotechnology proved its effectiveness for scientists and researchers in the lab as well as for engineers and technicians in the field. The economic importance of the re operation of aged electrical equipment is very efficient.
