Abstract

Introduction: Osteoarthritis is one of the most common cause of disabilities among older adults. Symptomatic osteoarthritis causes joint pain and tenderness, limiting one’s ability, which may increase the need to assistance with activities of daily living. Aerobic walking is a safe user friendly mode of exercise that can be successfully used to diminish knee joint pain, enhance joint function, and increase thigh muscle strength even in obese elderly patients having KOA. Aim of the study: Evaluate the effect of aerobic walking program on functional capacity of elderly patients with knee joint osteoarthritis. Method: A quasi-experimental research design was used in this study. This study was conducted at outpatients clinic of rheumatology and rehabilitation department affiliated to Mansoura University Hospital. The study included 66 elderly patients divided into two groups (study and control), thirty-three subjects for each group. This sample was divided randomly and equally to two groups. Data was collected using; Structured Interview Schedule Sheet, Western Ontario and Mcmaster Universities Osteoarthritis scale, The Short Form (36) Health Survey, Osteoarthritic Elderly Patients’ Knowledge Questionnaire and Aerobic Walking Exercise Flow Sheet. Results: The total knowledge score of the study group increased significantly after implementation of the proposed program. After implementation of the proposed program, the mean step count for study group was improved significantly. The total WOMAC score was decreased (improved) significantly in the study group at 12 weeks post proposed program. A statistical significant differences in all health status dimensions were found between both groups after implementation of the proposed program. Recommendations: Development of educational programs and training for all nursing staff and other health care providers in rheumatology outpatient clinics of Mansoura university hospitals focusing on integration of walking exercise in the treatment plan, more studies needed to evaluate the effectiveness of long-term follow up of aerobic walking program (intervention program).
