Abstract

The main aim of the present investigation was to focus on ecological and taxonomical (morphological and physiological) studies on the genus Alternaria and its allied genus,Stemphylium in Egypt.
Part I: Ecological Studies
1. One hundred and twenty-five samples from cultivated soil, air, plant leaves, wheat, and sorghum grains (25 samples each) were subjected to Mycological analyses.
2. Fungal isolation was carried out using three techniques: dilution plate method (for isolation from soil), exposed method (for air-spora) and direct-plate method (for plant leaves and grains). Four isolation media: Acidified Weak Potato-Dextrose Agar (AWPDA), Dichloran Chloramphenicol Peptone Agar (DCPA), Dichloran Glycerol Agar (DG18) and Potato Carrot Agar with Manganese (PCA-Mn) were used.
3. Mean moisture content in soil samples was high (12.3± 8.7%) compared with sorghum (9.3 ± 1.6%) and wheat (8.46 ± 1.21%) samples.
4. Two hundreds and seventy species related to 87 genera were isolated in the current work.
5. The species richness was positively correlated to the moisture content of soil, sorghum and wheat samples, since from the three substrates, soil samples gave the highest mean moisture contents (12.3± 8.7%) and number of genera and species (47 and 122) relative to wheat and sorghum samples.
