Abstract

Since the ancient history, marble, a precious ornamental stone, had been used as a building material where famous and talented artists carved it to decorate buildings for prestigious people. Recently, the demand of various types of marble is growing leading to enormous increase in the business of this stone sector industry. This industry has different operations like quarrying, sawing and cutting that produce large amount of wastes. Accumulation of these wastes and throwing it illegally adversely affect the surrounding environment from healthy side and moreover, its intermixing with the soil affect the geometric properties of the soil. However, these wastes can be considered beneficial from the economic and environmental points of view through its using to decrease consumption of natural resources and obviation in chronic shortage of building materials. This study aims to eliminate these pollutants by utilizing marble waste by different sizes in the manufacturing of hollow concrete block, as replacement for natural content such as sand, coarse aggregate and cement. In addition to, analysis and evaluating the thermal performance from hollow concrete blocks. This study is divided into two phases; the first phase includes the experimental program which was designed to produce the concrete mixes of hollow concrete blocks containing marble waste. Moreover, the mechanical and physical properties hollow concrete blocks. The second phase includes the effect of construction on characterization the blocks thermal conductivity and resistance for a building’s thermal performance. The evaluation of the thermal performance of the hollow concrete blocks with low emissivity treatment on the surface of the cavities was carried out using the Design Builder Software is a complete building design and environmental analysis tool that include the variety large of simulation and analysis functions. The first part includes, the experimental program includes study the waste marble effect and how to take advantage of recycled waste marble and the results of the analysis that were obtained in the range of variables that have been studied. A total of sixteen concrete mixtures, Control mixes were made with cement contents of (200 Kg/m3), with used the natural materials such as (natural sand, crushed stone aggregate and cement), and the other mixture of concrete blocks were made using different sizes of marble wastes such as (fine marble aggregate, coarse marble aggregate and marble powder) replacement as natural materials. Two mixes incorporating fine marble waste ratio 25% and 50% as replacement from sand, fine marble passed from 4.75 mm sieve. Four mixes incorporating coarse marble waste passed from 14 mm sieve and retained on 4.75 mm sieve at ratio 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% as replacement from coarse aggregate. Five mixes incorporating marble powder waste as additive by percent 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50% from cement weight. Four mixes incorporating more than type of waste in mix, with different content and replacement. The second phase, investigation of the properties of hollow concrete blocks containing marble waste such as (unit weight, the compressive strength, water absorption test and thermal conductivity) has been carried out. The results showed can be used marble wastes for the mixture with no detrimental effect on the properties of the concrete block products. Could be profitable sand, coarse aggregate or cement replacement in the future and would be of the highest value possible for the future. Finally, the simulation in this study was analysis and evaluating the thermal performance for a building’s, while this part has been made to characterize using marble wastes in blocks industry for study their thermal properties, this part includes the evaluation results of the thermal performance of the hollow concrete blocks with marble waste replacement were carried out using the (Design Builder software). The results showed that using up to 10% of marble powder, improved compressive strength of hollow concrete block products, The results in this study showed that the coarse marble wastes mixtures can be used to produce hollow load bearing concrete blocks, but the compressive strength decreased with addition of coarse marble up to 75% replace by weight of coarse aggregate, while economically, the cost estimate materials and marble waste ratios could reduce. Using of fine marble waste ratio in mixture improved the thermal conductivity properties of block products compared with the other size of marble waste.
