Abstract

The study area is represented by Kitchener Drain along El-Hamol district,
which is located in the east part of Kafr El-Sheikh governorate, north of the Nile
Delta, Egypt. It lies between Longitudes 30° 57’ 55” and 31° 14’ 59” East and
Latitude 31° 12’ 57” and 31° 33’ 07” North.
The study area covers an area of 637 km2 (151604 fed.), Kitchener drain
extends about 69 km from south to north, six sites covering 28 km of the drain
north and south El-Hamol city from karrakate to Khashaa were studied along
this drain.
The climatic conditions of the study area are typically arid Mediterranean
climate, characterized by aridity with long hot rainless summer, mild winter
with low amounts of rainfall. The minimum temperature value of 6.72oC was
recorded in January, while the maximum one of 32.17oC prevails during
August.
The present study aims to give a geo-environmental assessment of ElHamol area Kafr ElShiekh by studying the effect of Kitchener Drain on soil,
plant and water of the area. It will focus on the most recent picture of the
pollution in the El-Hamol area with special attention to heavy metals pollution.
The correlation between different components of polluted sediments and
different kinds of pollutants.
