Abstract

Introduction: Electronic media invade the world of young children in an unrestricted way. Positive and negative long-term consequences have been revealed on development, physical, and psychosocial milestone. Although, no clear figure is available for developing countries on electronic media used by children under five years. It is important to increase mothers’ awareness of the proper usage of electronic media with children. Web -based health education sessions is an effective material in educational programs. Web -based health education sessions can be accessed and available at anytime, anywhere, at level of learners’ talents with attractive multimedia content in significantly reduced cost. Aim: The study aims to design web-based health education sessions for mothers about electronic media used by their children. Method: A mixed research study design (cross-sectional study design and an online modified Delphi technique used) throughout this study. A purposive sampling technique was used in this study. The study participants involved 421 children less than five years with excluding children had special needs. In addition, 15 out of 421 mothers and 15 professional experts were recruited in this study to evaluate the designed web-based health education sessions. Setting: This study was conducted at 22 primary health care facilities affiliated to the Directorate of Health and Population in Mansoura city including health offices, family health centers, and primary health care units. Tools of data collection: The first tool modified scale, and six tools were developed by the researcher for data collection and designing web-based health education sessions as the following: socio-demographic and economic characteristics of mothers and their children, knowledge, subjective practice, attitude of mothers regarding electronic media, evaluation checklist to assess the designed health education sessions by the experts and another by mothers through two Delphi rounds. Results: It was figured out that 82.9% of studied mothers had a poor level of knowledge regarding using of electronic media. All of mothers had improper practices in relation to children using of electronic media. In addition to, all experts and studied mothers reported that the design of the health education sessions is clear and attractive. Besides, almost all the experts stated that it promoted the availability of information in a different educational material. Conclusion& Recommendations: The designed health education sessions may be considered as an effective educational material, so it is recommended to evaluate the effectiveness of the designed health education sessions on improving mothers’ knowledge and practice regarding electronic media that impact on children health.
