Abstract

This thesis aims to study the therapeutic effects of umbilical cord blood-CD43+ stem cells on pulmonary fibrosis in rats. The thesis divides into eight parts, part (1): the introduction which addresses the available therapeutic methods for pulmonary fibrosis, stem cell based therapy technology. Part (2): the literature review which addresses the pathogenesis of the disease, the stem cells and their types, and the role stem cell in lung repair and regeneration. Part (3): material and methods which involves the material and methods used for stem cell isolation and to study their therapeutic roles on pulmonary fibrosis. Part (4 &5): included the obtained results and the discussion of these results, the results divided into three sections, section1: the biochemical results which included the biochemical measurements of the hydroxyproline content and the level of profibrotic cytokines, the second section: included the histopathological evolutions of histological lung sections, and the third sections; included the immunohistochemical results which assesses the capacity of stem cell for differentiation into lung cells. Part (6): included the English summary. Part (7): included the references. Part (8): included the Arabic summary. The results of this thesis clearly indicate that CD34+ stem cells could be effective therapy for pulmonary fibrosis.
