Abstract

The aim of the study was to evaluate the clinical performance of different bioactive dental restorative materials: ACTIVA™ BioACTIVE (A
Resin-Modified Glass-Ionomer Bioactive Ionic Resin-Based Composite), Beautifil II (Giomer restorative material) and Fuji IX GP (Bioactive glass ionomer restorative material).
Sixteen patients aged between (25- 45) years were selected from the
clinic of Restorative Dentistry department, Faculty of Dentistry, Tanta University to participate as volunteers in the present study.
A total of forty-eight posterior teeth were involved in this study. Each
patient received at least three Class V cavities restorations of the different materials. They were randomly distributed representing 3 test groups (n=16), The prepared cavities in group I were restored with ACTIVA™ BioACTIVE, those of group II were restored with Beautifil II and those of group III were restored with Fuji IX GP EXTRA. All restorations were evaluated after 24 hours, after 6 and 12 months during which, two examiners were calibrated to evaluate the restorations according to the modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria for retention, marginal adaptation, postoperative sensitivity, marginal
discoloration, secondary caries, anatomical form, surface texture, and color matching. Marginal seal of the tested restorations was further examined under scanning electron microscope using epoxy resin replicas for confirming the recorded clinical results. The results of the current study revealed 100% recall period after 1year clinical service. Using Chi-square test, there was no statistically significant
differences between the three tested groups for retention, marginal adaptation, marginal discoloration, anatomical form, surface texture and
color matching (p>.05). None of the tested restorations had secondary caries at any evaluation period. Post-operative hypersensitivity was found only in 18.8 % of cases restored with Activa Bioactive restorations (group I) which subsided by the end of the evaluation period, while Chi-Square test revealed a statistically significant difference between the different evaluation periods
(p = 0.045) & among the tested groups at the base line (p = 0.041). SEM
examination of marginal seal revealed no statistically significant difference between the three groups in any evaluation period & between different evaluation periods in group I and II (p value = 0.468 & 0.269) regarding the adaptation respectively. However, there was a statistically significant difference between the three follow up periods in group III (p= 0.048) indicating that marginal seal of Fuji IX was significantly affected by time. The statistical relationship (Spearman’s correlation test at a significant level
of p≤0.05) was performed between the related tested criteria in each group
after 6 months and 12 months follow up period and revealed a positive
correlation between the related tested criteria.
