Abstract

Obesity represents a major health problem worldwide and its incidence and prevalence are increasing rapidly. Obesity as a medical term refers to excessive accumulation of body fat in relation to body mass. Obesity is also defined by The World Health Organization (WHO) to be the excessive fat accumulation in the body that affects the health and well-being of the individual.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is highly associated with obesity. NAFLD is a group of diseases that is associated with fatty infiltration of the liver that starts with simple fat accumulation (steatosis) that may progress into hepatic inflammation: nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), with or without accompanying hepatic fibrosis/cirrhosis, with some patients eventually developing hepatocellular carcinoma.
There are many kinds of methods in treating morbid obesity, such as diet, exercise, liposuction, behavior modification and drugs. Bariatric surgery is currently the only effective treatment for morbidly obese patients. Moreover, recent studies showed beneficial effects on liver injury after bariatric surgery. However little is known about the time course of these changes after bariatric surgery.
Our study included 50 obese patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis admitted to minimally invasive surgery units in surgery Hospitals Heidelberg University Germany, Salem Hospital in Heidelberg Germany and general surgery department, Tanta University Hospitals, during the period from April 2018 to April 2020.
