Abstract

For a considerably extended period of time, man’s attention toward his immediate surrounding has faced a substantial deterioration, a reality perceived as a radical change and serious shift in both, the human awareness of the natural world, on one hand, and the ecological norms and conventions that have jointly been observed, acknowledged and thoughtfully adhered to. These changes have resulted in the emergence of unprecedented human practices that highlight an acute shortcoming and stringent drawback in the individual and collective mannerism. Some detrimental repercussions of such a decline are global warming, desertification, melting of the ice caps, the appearance of climate convergence zones, in addition to other greenhouse effects represented by arable land erosion, floods, tsunamis and food shortage and potable water scarcity. The outset of and rapid mounting of these environmental phenomena marks a grave deficiency in the human cultural conduct on the global spectrum; a strain reflected in the moral and spiritual countenance of the life of man at present. Taking these measures into thoughtful consideration, the present dissertation endeavours to diagnose the ecological and multicultural manifestations in the poetics of the Anglo-American poet T. S. Eliot, the two Iraqi poets Badir Shakir Al-Sayyab and Mudhaffar Al-Nawwab. The study earnestly attempts to investigate the concept of ecopoetry through discussing the multiple explanations and numerous exegeses proposed by scholars specialised in this type of poetry which began to take over late in the twentieth century. In an early phase, the study tries to introduce the most prominent work produced by the designated poets and present a critical rationalization for the ecocritical assessment of their work in light of the conventions applied to this type of poetry.
