Abstract

The misrepresentation and the distorted images of Muslims in the American media and literature for over a hundred years have been intensified remarkably, specifically after the attacks of 11th September 2001, and have become even more pronounced recently after the election of Donald Trump in 2016. Therefore, it is essential to understand the way Muslims have been portrayed in literature, specifically, in children’s books. This dissertation examines the representation of Muslims in forty-two picture books that were published in the United States in the first twenty years of this millennium and uses multicultural perspective to investigate whether or not these books are culturally authentic and quality-oriented multicultural materials. The objective of this examination is to inspect what viewpoints about Muslims are being communicated to children through these books. The analysis suggests that despite the widespread distorted images of Muslims and Islam found in American society, around three-quarters of the analyzed picture books published in the United States in the first twenty years of this millennium could be considered as quality standardized multicultural books. The dissertation examines the criteria of evaluating the high-quality multicultural literature based on the frameworks of Junko Yokota (1993), Mingshui Cai (2002), and Denise Agosto (2007): accuracy, expertise, and respect.
