Abstract

Stroke is a serious disease that entails an enormous burden
of mortality, morbidity, disability and health care cost. Ischemic stroke accounts
for 80 percent of all stroke cases. Aim: This study aimed to assess the
emergency nurse’s knowledge and practice regarding care of acute ischemic
stroke patients undergoing recombinant tissue plasminogen activator. Design:
A Descriptive exploratory research design was utilized in this study. Setting:
Data were collected from Emergency Department, As-Salam International
Hospital at Al-maady districl in Egypt. Sample: A convenience sample of 38

nurses both male and female. Tools of data collection: Three tools were utilized
in this study which are: (1) Nurses demographic questionnaire (2) Nurses
Knowledge assessment questionnaire (3) Nurses Observational checklist.
Results: This study revealed that more than half of studied nurses had
satisfactory level of total knowledge regarding care of acute ischemic stroke
patients. The most of the studied nurses were competent regarding care of acute
ischemic stroke patients undergoing recombinant tissue plasminogen activator.
There was positive fair correlation between total knowledge of the studied
nurses with their total practices regarding care of acute ischemic stroke patients
undergoing recombinant tissue plasminogen activator. Conclusion: The study
concluded that there were satisfactory level of nurses’ knowledge and practice
regarding care of acute ischemic stroke patients. Recommendations: Increase
knowledge of emergency nurses through a seminar and workshop and
encourage the implementation of future educational program for nurses in all
hospitals where recombinant tissue plasminogen activator administration is applied.
