Abstract

Starting from the essence of CDA to go beyond words to search for hidden purposes and tacit presuppositions. This study investigates the discursive strategies used in the political speeches of Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad during the 14th Malaysian general election with an attempt to unveil his socio-political motifs, ideology and messages. The aim is to detect how. Mahathir skillfully dominates the minds of people and convince them to elect him despite his leadership of opposing parties united in the face of his old party UNMO that stayed in power under Mahathir’s leadership for 22 years (1981- 2003). Data for the qualitative and quantitative study comprised some of speeches, blogs, and media interviews that occurred between 7 January 2018 and 9 May 2018, a period that can be referred to as the peak period of electioneering campaigns. The data collected were analyzed by some analytical tools of critical discourse analysis, with emphasis on Fairclough’s dialectical-relational approach to CDA. The study highlights Mahathir’s employment of discursive strategies such as metaphor and deictic pronouns for inclusion and exclusion as well as some rhetorical resources (interactive and interactional) for persuasion, identification with the youth culture, employment of historical allusions, positive self-presentation, negative-other representation, etc. to express resistance and challenge. Finally, the study concludes that Mahathir. legitimizes both individuals and actions to turn on his own people and to correct old mistakes. His union with a former enemy is a step to fix a mistake and to put aside his old dispute for the sake of his beloved country. critical discourse analysis, metaphor, intertextuality, interdiscursivity, and interdisciplinarity.
