Abstract

ABSTRACT
Najmah Formation considered as one of the most interested Jurassic unconventional Formation in Kuwait; this is due to its specific lithological composition, which makes it an excellent source rock and producer Formation as well.
Sabriyah and Raudhatain are oil fields located in norther part of Kuwait; those two fields considered as two of the biggest hydrocarbon fields in north Kuwait area. The distance between Sabriyah and Raudhatain fields is around five kilometers; subtle saddles separate them from each other.
The drilling reports in Najmah Formation for the wells drilled in these two fields, shows that wells located in Sabriyah field exhibit comparably drilling events or problems within Najmah Formation as losing mud circulation, Formation failure leading to enlarged hole, hydraulic fracturing, borehole collapse, kicks and gains that are much more than the wells located in Raudhatain field.
Apparently, these problems appear extensively during drilling conditions. However, based on the structural and geomechanical analyses, a comparison has done between Najmah Formation by taking some wells in both fields that reveal activation of much more problems, during drilling, in Najmah-Sabriyah than Najmah-Raudhatain.
Causes of problems essentially related to the difference geological and geomechanical properties. To clarify these problems dealt with the tectonic history during Jurassic period, structural and geomechanical analyses using seismic interpretation to generate depth structure map and using different geophysical attributes for fault interpretation and distribution in Najmah Formation in Sabriyah and Raudhatain oil fields. Analyzing image logs with the available cores carried out in Najmah Formation to know more about fractures concentration and stresses directions. Furthermore, fractures interpretation focused on the open fractures to give general idea about the other types of fractures also geomechanical properties like unconfined compressive strength (UCS) calculated by using cores, and calibrated with logs to differentiate between Najmah Formation strength in both fields and, in turn, create a link between UCS results and drilling problems. Finally, building (1D-MEM) was conducted in the present oil fields and the obtained results are used in identifying the accurate mud weight window for Najmah Formation in each field to avoid the drilling problems in the future planed wells.
