Abstract

In spite of improvement at the level of pre-hospital care and the improvement of surgical instruments and interventions modalities, penetrating chest injuries is still really challenging problem and many patients die before reaching the hospital or at the scene of the accident.
Fortunately most of these injuries can be managed non-operatively both rapidly and simply by (tube thoracostomy). Regarding the type of resulted complications, this method can be considered the most appropriate treatment in chest traumas.
As our hospital is a trauma referral center, it can be concluded that men in the age range of 20–40 are the main susceptible group for this type of injury and stabbing is the most common cause of penetrating chest injury.
Accidents and penetrating chest injuries are directly proportion with the violence and riots, so that to decrease the occurrence of penetrating chest trauma, a higher social security is needed.
Presence of highly specialized trauma team, highly skilled personnel and improvement of instrumentation especially endoscopic surgical techniques together with appropriate pre-hospital care, full equipped ambulances and rapid patient transfer to the hospital are essential factors to improve the outcome of penetrating chest trauma patients and improve both mortality and morbidity.
