Abstract

Chapter 1 is an introduction to the behavior of the slender columns, which discusses the slenderness in compression members. The types of the second order effects are also discussed. The chapter also mentions the current methodologies used for the design of these members, and the problems lying within them. The objective and the scope of the thesis is also mentioned.
Chapter 2 is a literature survey. Which discusses the basis of the design of slender concrete columns for several codes including the Eurocode, British Standards, ECP and the ACI. Also, it mentions the previous works investigated by several researchers in the fields, in which some of them fixed some of the code propositions, and other tested multiple slender columns which will be used in the upcoming chapters.
Chapter 3 holds a comparison between experimental works and an analytical model using SAP 2000. Two methods were used for the SAP model, the frame element, and the layered shell element. The purpose of this chapter is to choose a reliable method represent the analytical side of the results.
Chapter 4 shall develop a large-scale parametric study. Various parameters were added in order to capture the p-delta effect of the braced slender columns when put under eccentric loading. Graphs and tables shall be presented which will display the behavior of these columns, and the effect of various parameters on them.
Chapter 5 aims to display some errors in the current code propositions. The chapter shall create a comparison through graph plots and tables, which will compare the above-mentioned code propositions along with other methods proposed by the author against the numerical model results. The aim is to fix the irregularities in the current methods.
