Abstract

The development of the bow form is found to be very effective in reducing the total resistance, depending on the navigation condition of the working area. Accordingly, the concept of flexible bow form was proposed to suit that operating conditions, however, it is essential to find an effective way to select the optimal bow form. The aim of this work is to use the artificial neural networks technique to find the optimal predictive model (OPM) and hence, obtain the optimal bow form. In this study, the David Taylor Model Basin (DTMB) 5415 is used as a reference hydrodynamic model. This model has a bow form of sonar dome bulb.
Modifications of the sonar dome bulb are performed by changing either its length or breadth or both together. The modified models are formed into three families (A), (B), and (C) according to the change in the bulb geometry. The family (A) includes the change in bulb’s length, the family (B) relates to the change in the width, and the family (C) in both length and width together, resulting 11 modified models in addition to the original model.
