Abstract

Background : Obesity and osteoporosis are two of the most important diseases strictly related with an increased prevalence in both mortality and morbidity worldwide. With the increase in obesity and osteoporosis worldwide, an important discussion has developed and focused on whether being overweight and obese can have a detrimental or protective effect on skeletal health. So our study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between obesity and osteoporosis in premenopausal women. Patients and Methods: This prospective study was carried out on 50 obese premenopausal women selected from Outpatients Clinic, Mansoura Specialized Medical Hospital, Mansoura University during the period from October 2016 to March 2017. These patients were compared with 50 normal weight females of the matched age as a control group. Results: In the present study, we found that obesity significantly increased the risk for osteoporosis, osteopenia, and low bone mass in all participants. There was a significant negative correlation between obesity and Z score at forearm, Z score at hip and Z score at lumbar vertebrae in simple linear negative analysis and even after adjustment of each of (age and waist circumference) (age and waist hip ratio) between cases and controls (all P value <0.05). Conclusion : Based on the results of our study we can conclude that, overweight and obesity can have a detrimental effect on skeletal health and may increase the risk for osteopenia, osteoporosis, and low bone mass.
