Abstract

This thesis studies some of the social political characteristics of the British playwright David Edgar. This study focuses on the device of negotiation as an essential element in Edgar’s political works and his focus to introduce a new genre of documentary theater or docudrama. This study demonstrates that the playwright used some technical devices which were created by the political theater pioneers like Bertlot Brecht .David Edgar depends on the idea of negotiation and communication in his theater , negotiation between all conflicting parties in the world from East to West ,and the Palestinian cause . David Edgar uses the theater as a space for all political minorities to introduce their problems and social political rights .In building the structure of his theater ,Edgar depends on political conflicts which deeply had a profound historical background and roots such as wars in Balkan and western Eastern Europe conflict or the historical conflicts between Eastern Europe ethnic groups . This thesis focuses on representing these features through a theatrical trilogy which is called the iron curtain which records all paralyzing actions in the world after Berlin wall fall, these three plays are The Prisoner’s Dilemma , The Shape of The Table and Pentecost.
