Abstract

This thesis studies the syntactic construction of Ɂal-Tanaazu’ [case conflict] in three linguistic theories (i.e., Ɂal-Basra, Ɂal-Kufa, and Chomsky’s Generative Enterprise). The thesis studies the theory of Ɂiʕmaal [government/ case assignment] in the light of Chomsky’s theory (1981). Case theory deals with the distribution of the noun phrases (NP) in any given language. Case can either be abstract as in English or realized through diacratics as in CA. The researcher has collected the Classical Arabic (CA) data from Ɂal-Kitaab [the book], by Sibawayh, and Ɂal-Muqtađab [brief], by Ɂal-Mubarrid, representing the two leading schools in CA. Ɂal-Tanaazu’ occurs when two verbs compete for assigning case to one constituent. It covers different types of case assigners. However, the thesis covers only the verbs. According to the Basra school, represented by Sibawayh, the second verb theta-marks or assigns case to the shared NP. On the other hand, the Kufa school, represented by Ɂal-Mubarrid, chooses the first verb to theta-mark or assign case to the shared NP. The concept of Ɂiđmaar and its constraints are explored according to each school. In the light of Chomsky’s theory, it is highlighted that each school maintains Theta Theory and the adjacency condition at the DS level, with Rule Ordering. It is shown that sub-fields of linguistic theory (e.g. case, rightward movement, deletion, theta theory, among others) are needed to account for a full-range of data that deal with Ɂal-Tanaazu’
According to Ɂal-Basra’s and Ɂal-Kufa’s thoughts, there are empty categories. The first deals with deletion and the latter with rightward movement. The study shows that CA linguistic thoughts complement one another. It, also, attempts to resolve the conflict between these two schools in the light of Chomsky’s Principles and Parameters theory.
The thesis is organized as follows: Chapter one presents an introduction and the theoretical framework. Chapter two explores Ɂal-Basra’s linguistic thought represented by Sibawayh. Chapter three explores Ɂal-Kufa’s linguistic thought represented by Ɂal-Mubarrid. Chapter four analyzes the data in the light of Chomsky’s theory as a unified approach of deletion and movement. Finally, chapter five concludes the findings and recommends different areas for further research.
