Abstract This thesis is concerned with studying the air pollution levels in two main areas in Egypt, Greater Cairo, and Menoufia Governorate, using tree leaves and soil samples collected from thirty sampling sites in the investigated areas. the samples were analyzed using neutron activation analysis and atomic absorption spectroscopy to get information about the elemental concentrations in these samples. The collected samples were irradiated by epithermal neutrons at REGATA -pulsed reactor IBR-2 in Dubna, Russian Federation. The obtained concentrations of tree leaves and soil were compared to the reference plant and upper crust constituents respectively Thirty-two and forty-one elements were detected in tree leaves and soil samples respectively. Statistical calculations were made to compare the level of pollution in Greater Cairo to that in Menoufia Governorate. Enrichment factor calculations, Pearson correlations and discriminant analyses were done to differentiate between the sources of pollution. Pollution load indices were calculated to show the level of pollution in each sampling site. The analyses of the obtained elements revealed that both tree leave species can indicate the level of pollution. The high level of pollution in Greater Cairo was due to anthropogenic sources while the high level in Menoufia Governorate was due to geogenic, natural or agricultural sources. |
