Abstract

Breast imaging plays an important role in early detection of breast cancer, also for evaluation and follows up after treatment. Early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer has a significant impact on the outcome of treatment and survival rates
This is a retrospective study held between March 2018-Jan 2019 in calibration with national project for women health upon the screening study upon we included all asymptomatic patients older than 40 years old at that duration (n=2000), 190 patients had findings at screening mammography that read by two consultant-specialists at the main office in Cairo, screening report and images were sent back to our hospital where we contacted patients for recall visit. 160 patients had attended .Complementary ultrasonogrpahy, sonomamography reporting and BIRADS assessment were done Patients with suspicious findings had further tru-cut biopsy and histopathological correlation, patient with normal or benign lesions had psychic reassurance and 3 follow up with 6 months interval
We found significant correlation between personal history of breast cancer and diagnosed cases of breast cancer in contrast to breast density
113 cases were classified as BIRADS II, 23 cases as BIRADS III, 15 cases as BIRADS IV, 9 as BIRADS V, 24 cases had biopsy (BIRADS IV, V and one case of was BIRADS III), 21 of them were malignant cases (17 IDC cases and 4 DCI cases) 9 of those 21 cases had axillary node invasion by ultrasonography. The diagnosed benign lesions were simple cysts, fibrocystic, duct ectasia , fibroadenoma , glandular island, intramammary node and fat necrosis
We concluded that breast sonomamography combination may be more beneficial as regarding the diagnostic indices, reducing the recall rate and patient’s stress, the availability of any further assessments at the same visit and saving transportation, thus we suggest sonomamography as suitable screening protocol in our society.
Conclusion
Breast cancer screening is the most beneficial way to detect breast cancer early and to have best therapeutic response.
Complementary ultrasound to screening mammography increase the diagnostic accuracy, most of the recalled cases proved to have benign lesions, so combined breast sonomamography in the same session could be more effective to reduce the unnecessary recall rate and patient’s stress due to recall, elevate the diagnostic indices as well as the cost of unnecessary patient’s transportations
