Abstract

Summary Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is one of the major causes of chronic hepatitis affecting about two billion individuals causing cirrhosis in about 40% of untreated patients, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). For the assessment of hepatic fibrosis liver biopsy is still considered as the gold standard method. But its invasive nature limits its use. Fibroscan is considered as an alternative non-invasive and sensitive procedure for the assessment of hepatic fibrosis and steatosis. One of the component of standard complete blood cell count is Red blood cell distribution width (RDW). It is mainly used to identify the cause of anemia. Recently, many studies have proved that RDW can serve as an independent predictor of prognosis or as an inflammatory indicator in a set of diseases such as lung cancer, pulmonary hypertension, peripheral artery disease, acute myocardial infarction and acute infections as HBV infection. In addition, platelets can also be used for the detection of fibrosis in recent studies. The relation between HBV, hepatic fibrosis and red blood cell distribution width to platelet ratio is still controversial and under investigation. his cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of red cell distribution width (RDW) to platelet ratio for detection of liver fibrosis compared with fibroscan in chronic hepatitis B patients. After approval of Tanta university ethical committee, an informed written consent was taken from all patients before participating in the study.
