Abstract The aim of the current study was: (1) Estimating the frequency of adulthood and childhood ADHD among patients with SUD attending Minia Hospital for Mental Health and Addiction Treatment. (2) Describing the profiles of SUD and their severity in association with ADHD diagnosis among those patients. (3) Identifying the Comorbidity of other psychiatric conditions as well as its relation to the presence of adulthood and childhood ADHD in patients of substance use. The current study involved two main parts: 1- Theoretical part. 2- Practical part. 1- Theoretical part This included the review of literature which consisted of three chapters: Chapter (1) This chapter involved a broad review of addiction its definition and prevalence, neurobiology and types, followed by looking at the evolution of the criteria for diagnosis according to DSM disciplines and the ICD10, then the substance-induced disorders were discussed briefly followed by discussing the treatment of addiction, and finally an overview of studies on SUD in Egypt. Chapter (2) This chapter involved a review of the attention-deficit hyperactivity disorders, its definition, prevalence with factors that may affect it, its shared neurobiology with SUD, followed by the evolution of the criteria diagnosing it according to the DSM discipline, the etiology of ADHD, followed by reviewing difficulties and complications of ADHD, a brief review of other disorders occurring with ADHD, after that we discussed the treatment for ADHD finally, an overview of studies on ADHD in Egypt. Chapter (3) This chapter involved a review of literature about attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder as a risk factor for substance use disorders, prevalence of ADHD in substance-using populations then prevalence of substance use among adults with ADHD, followed by a review of the link between ADHD and substance use disorders, after that we discussed the different issues in identifying suspected SUD in ADHD patients, followed by symptom pattern and drug choice in substance-using population with comorbid ADHD, then we viewed if stimulant treatment in childhood leads to subsequent substance use in adulthood. Finally, we finished with the treatment options for substance use disorders in adult with ADHD. |
