Abstract

Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT) is considered to be the most common preventable cause of hospital related death. Whereas, DVT occurs when a blood clot or thrombus forms in a deep vein, usually restricting blood flow. Therefore, continuing instructions and education has been regarded as a tool to cope with the fast changes in care methods and improving nursing professional standards. Aim of the study: was to evaluate the effect of educational program for nurses in preventing DVT among children undergoing orthopedic surgeries. The setting of the study was conducted at inpatient of orthopedic surgeries department at Benha teaching hospital and Benha University Hospital in Benha city. A quasi-experimental design was utilized in the study. A convenient sample was utilized in this study. Tools used for data collection in this study consisted of three tools as the following; Tool I A structured interviewing questionnaire sheet; it composed of three parts, Personal characteristic of nurses, children and nurses knowledge about DVT prevention.Tool II is concerned with Observational checklist for nurses’ practices regarding application of DVT preventive measures; and Tool III is Autar Deep Vein Thrombosis Risk Assessment Scale sheet. The study results revealed that, less than three quarters of nurses were done the practices scores in all items post program implementation and on the other hand, more than three quarters of the studied nurses had correct and complete answer post program implementation. Moreover, the study findings revealed that, there was a highly statistically significant relation between personal characteristics of the studied nurses and their total practices score post educational program. Conclusion: The study concluded that, designed of an educational program were effective in improving nurses’ knowledge and practices regarding prevention of DVT among children undergoing orthopedic surgeries.
