Abstract

This study presents extended analyses of different quay wall structural systems at Port Said East Container Terminal. These analyses are based on three-dimensional finite element software -PLAXIS 3D 2013- with various aspects of deformation and stability behaviors. The soft clay soil interaction sensitivity on the existing quay walls located in East Port Said is analyzed. A parametric study is carried out for three different soil profiles using the strain-hardening constitutive model (HSM) with different soil parameters as well as the clay layer thickness variations. A full description of eleven case studies for the existing diaphragm quay walls on each soil profile is provided where the recommended constitutive soil parameters are achieved for the optimization analysis related to the quay walls in that location. Also, the research proposed a new quay wall system -Open Cell Sheet Pile (OCSP)- whose validity is verified; to play the same role of the existing quay walls at East Port Said Port as an optimum quay wall. Results of fifteen case studies are presented graphically to give an insight into the proposed system behavior. Based on the related constitutive soil parameters, an integrated graph is created as a helpful tool for the design engineer. A series of comparisons is presented between the two existing quay wall types in addition to the proposed OSCP type as well as a modified diaphragm wall type to select an optimum quay wall structural system that can be used in future extensions from technical and economical feasibility. The construction costs of the quay main structures systems are estimated per meter length based on the official published Egyptian Ministry of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, where the construction methodology statements are presented also.
