Abstract

Substance use disorders are common, complex disorders, characterized by compulsive substance seeking and use despite harmful consequences. The initiation of substance use takes place mainly during adolescence. An early onset of substance use is associated with a significantly greater risk of later developing a substance use disorder.
Several factors were reported to precipitate SUD development in adolescents. Co-existence of psychiatric disorders, personality characteristics and/or parental factors have an impact on adolescents and may drive the urge for substance use.
In the current study we aimed to investigate presence of other psychiatric disorders in adolescents with substance use disorder according to MINI KID, to highlight the rate of occurrence and severity of impulsivity among adolescents with SUD and to compare the impact of the familial parenting style between adolescents with SUD and adolescents without SUD.
We included 80 (40 adolescents with substance use disorder and 40 apparently healthy adolescent with matching demographic criteria as a control group). All included participants were subjected to inquiry of demographic data and drug history. Then, MINI KID, Barratt impulsiveness scale, socioeconomic status scale and parenting style questionnaire were performed.
Regrading demographic data, significant association between parental substance use in SUD group was detected. Parental scale

assessment revealed that father discrimination and father overprotection were significantly higher in SUD group, father positive parenting was significantly lower in SUD group compared to control. mother discrimination, volatility, over controlling and positive parenting were significantly lower in SUD, mother overprotection was significantly higher in SUD group compared to control group.
Assessment of Barret impulsiveness revealed that SUD group had statistically significant higher impulsiveness scores compared to the control group. Regarding psychiatric disorders comorbidities with SUD in adolescents, several disorders were present however the most common psychiatric disorders were conduct disorder, anxiety disorder, ADHD and panic disorder respectively.
