Abstract

Background: Female genital cutting (FGC) is the collective name given to traditional practices that involve partial or total cutting away of the female external genitalia whether for cultural or other non-therapeutic reasons.
Aim and objectives: The main objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of female circumcision during the past 20 years among women in Minia Governorate, the types practiced and to declare if it has any deleterious sequelae on female menstrual, obstetric and sexual performance.
Subjects And Methods: this was a cross- sectional study was conducted including two thousand sexually active women were recruited randomly from among the attendants of the Gynecology Clinic – Minia University Hospital – Minia Governorate –Egypt. The duration of the study ranged from 6-12 months.
Results: results of the study revealed that 646(32.3%) were non- Circumcised and 1354(67.7%) were Circumcised, and Type of circumcision on examination showed that 722(53.3%) were type I and 632(46.7%) were type II.
Conclusion: This study concluded that female circumcision is still a prevalent traditional act in our society particularly, among rural, illiterates, low-educated and non-working women. Female circumcision has definitely many long-term health problems, and the circumcised women are more exposed to gynecological, marital, obstetric and psychological problems.
