Abstract

Blood borne diseases are those infectious diseases which are transmitted through the blood or other body fluids. The aim of the study was to assess knowledge and practices of dental health care workers regarding blood borne diseases prevention in Benha City. Research design observational cross-section study was utilized to conduct this study. Setting this study was conducted in Dental Clinics of Benha University Hospital, Benha Teaching Hospital, Benha Ophthalmology Hospital and Maternal & Child Health Care Center in Benha City. Sample Aconvenience sample of dental health care workers(110) in the selected dental clinics. Tools data was collected by using two tools I): An interviewing questionnaire divided into three parts, including a: (demographic characteristics of the dental health care workers), b:( past medical history) c:( knowledge questionnaire of dental health care workers about blood borne disease). II): An observational checklist divided into two parts. a) Checklist for dental health care workers practices toward preventive measures of blood borne diseases. b) Observational environmental checklist. Results 32.7% of the studied sample had poor knowledge score about blood borne diseases while 30% had average knowledge score and only 37.3% had good knowledge score, 44.5% of studied sample had satisfactory practices regarding blood borne diseases prevention and only 55.5% had unsatisfactory practices. Conclusion: Less than one third of the studied sample had poor knowledge score about blood borne diseases and less than two fifth had satisfactory practices, and there was a statistically significant relation between the dental health care worker’s educational level and their total knowledge score. Recommendations: Health education programs for dental health care workers, includes training for blood borne diseases, safety measures, health problems and prevention, using personal protective
equipment’s and using universal precaution measures.
