Abstract Objective : Evaluate and compare between Bio-Oss, platelet rich fibrin and their combination on bone healing in the mandible of guinea pigs by radiographic, histologic and histomrphometric analysis. Materials and Methods : This study was conducted on forty-five male guinea pigs based on an α of 5 % and a power of 85 %. Two circular bone defects were created in the mandible. The bony defects on the right side were left to heal spontaneously and the left defects were implanted with platelet rich fibrin, Bio-Oss or combination (split method). After euthinization at 2, 4, and 8 weeks, each segment containing bone defect was processed for radiographic, histologic and histomorphometric analysis. Results : Histological, histomorphometrical and radiographical finding showed gradual increase in bone formation in all groups with different degrees. For computed tomography (BD) and histomorphometric analysis (BA) were statistically significantly higher in combination group than Bio-Oss group, PRF group and control group at each time point respectively. Conclusion : The combination of autogenic platelet rich fibrin and xenogenic Bio-Oss bone graft can accelerate bone healing more than when these materials are used alone. |
