Abstract Spastic cerebral palsy patients have an increased risk of suffering from constipation , and its prevalence among CP children is 74% , both pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods are available for the management of constipation. We aimed to assess the therapeutic and adverse effects of oral Magnesium Sulfate therapy on constipation in children with spastic CP, and recommend oral magnesium sulfate as a standard therapeutic protocol for treatment of refractory cases of constipation in children with CP. Magnesium Sulfate has a historically famous role as a muscle relaxant and osmotic laxative ,it acts by accelerating small intestinal transit and reducing the intestinal absorption of fat, protein and carbohydrates following solid meal ingestion it tends to increase the frequency and weight of stools. This exprimental study was performed to assess the efficacy of oral MgSo4 on constipation in patients with cerebral palsy. Our study included 50 included 2groups group a :included 25 patients received Magnesium Sulfate 4% given orally in a dose 5mg up to 20 mg per dose on demand with follow up weekly for one month . and group B:included 25 patients who were receiving other laxatives. According to the result of our study we have found that oral MgSo4 is an effective drug in treating constipation ,as there were marked increase in number bowel movement ,decrease of straining ,improvement of consistency of stool, no effect on other gut symptoms(vomiting ,abdominal distention and abdominal pain) and has limited side effects as diarrhea . Finally we can say that , oral Mg Sulphate may be an interesting alternative to other known laxatives for the treatment of constipation ,especially in patients with cerebral palsy as it is highly effective ,has less side effects, and small dose is required to achieve good compliance. |
