Abstract

Pulmonary embolism (PE) can be a severe disease and is difficult to diagnose , given its non specific signs and symptoms . Because of this, testing patients with suspected acute PE has increased dramatically. The current cohort retrospective study is to determine the frequency of pulmonary embolism (PE) in chest department - Assuit University hospital , ( between January 2011 and December 2015 ) , its association with the pattern of respiratory illness , type of treatment and co-morbidities . Also , to determine the risk factors , effective treatment and mortality rates of the disease. The study included 222 patient with confirmed PE by Computed Tomography-Pulmonary Angiogram (CTPA) . All the following were collected from patient sheets ( history , clinical examination data , ECG, CT pulmonary angiography , doppler US on deep venous system , Echocardiography , Chest ultrasound laboratory reports , treatment lines and outcomes). The following results were observed : Frequency of suspected PE who were finally diagnosed as PE with or without CTPA and received treatment was 1.75 % of the total number of patients admitted during this period at the chest department in Assuit university hospital. Frequency of confirmed diagnosis of PE patients by CTPA that already received treatment - related to total admitted patients - is 1.5 %.The Mean age of confirmed PE in 222 patients was 49.81 ± 11.00 years. Related to smoking habbits of the patient , 107 patients were non smokers , 37 were current smokers and 49 were former smokers. Related to occupation , 43.7 % of patients were housewives , and 23.9 % were employees with jobs requiring sitting for long periods. As regard to symptom , dyspnea was the most common symptom . One hundred eighty seven patients (84 %) suffered from dyspnoea. Chest pain was the second common symptom (62%). The least common presentation was syncope , which was found in 20 patients (9%).
