Abstract

Background: A unique relationship between the mother and her fetus starts long before birth. Maternal-fetal attachment is an essential behavior to communicate with and stimulate the fetus before it commences its journey to the outside world. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of training attachment behavior on the relationship between a pregnant woman and her fetus Design: A quasi-experimental design was used. Sample: A purposive sample including 100 pregnant women were participated. Setting: Antenatal Clinics of Al-Azhar University Hospital in New Damietta City, Damietta Governorate, Egypt. Tools: A structured Interview Questionnaire, Canley’s Maternal-Fetal attachment Scale (CMFAS) and fetal position awareness score (FPAS). Results: Pregnant women who received training on Attachment behaviors regarding active communication to the fetus e.g. listening to Quran, counting fetal movement, palpating the abdomen and positive imagination to the fetus significantly exhibited higher degree of their maternal fetal attachment scales (p <0.001) at the follow-up assessment after four weeks than before. Also there were highly statistical significant differences regarding differentiation self from the fetus, role taking, interaction with fetus, attributing characteristics with fetus, giving of self, and their total score( P <0.001**). The highest Means ±SDs were found in the 34th week post-training. Else, there was a statistically significant difference along the group as fetal awareness position scores were improved after the training than before, there were highly statistically significant differences among all its items and their total score (P<0.001**).The highest Mean ±SD for all domains’ items was found in the 34th week post-training period. Conclusion: Training on attachment behaviors improved maternal awareness of the baby’s health which affect on increasing the maternal fetal attachment scores overtime. Recommendation: Raising pregnant women awareness regarding importance of practicing attachment behaviors by approaching camping in private and public antenatal clinics in rural and urban areas.
