Abstract Egypt, as a developing country, is facing major problems that adverse the sustainable development planning. These challenges include high population density with an ever-increasing rate, a limited cultivatable land, degradation of the fertile lands and a shortage in freshwater resources. Out of these issues, freshwater scarcity remains the major constrain because irrigated agriculture, the main consumer of water (more than 85% of water demand), is the pillar for the Egyptian national economy. |
