Abstract

Susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI) is a recently developed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique that is increasingly being used to narrow the differential diagnosis of many neurologic disorders. It exploits the magnetic susceptibility differences of various compounds including deoxygenated blood, blood products, iron and calcium, thus enabling a new source of contrast in MR.
SWI can also detect calcifications and can differentiate it from hemorrhage using the phase images.
The most common use of SWI is for the identification of small amounts of hemorrhage/blood products or calcium, both of which may be in apparent on other MRI sequences.
Compared with conventional MRI sequences, susceptibility-weighted imaging may show lesions in better detail or with higher sensitivity. Familiarity with the pediatric susceptibility-weighted imaging signal variance is essential to prevent misdiagnosis.
This study aimed to assess the role of Susceptibility-weighted imaging in evaluation of different brain lesions.
The study included 20 patients of pediatric age group presented with different brain lesions.
All patients were subjected to history taking, thorough clinical examination, conventional MRI study of the brain and susceptibility-weighted imaging of the brain.
In the studied cases SWI proved to be more sensitive in hemorrhage detection than CT or conventional MRI. in about 60% of the cases hemorrhage appeared on SWI only.
