Abstract

Purpose: To compare and evaluate the effect of different implant numbers and distribution used to retain mandibular overdentures. Points of study were the peri-implant soft tissue health including sulcus depth, bleeding and plaque indices. Material and methods: Six healthy completely edentulous patients were selected for this study. According to the implant number and distribution, the patients were classified into three equal groups as follows: group I (single implant installed in the midline ), group II (two implants installed in the premolars areas) and group III (one midline implant and two implants installed in the premolars areas). After the three months of osseointegeration, the ball abutments were screwed into the implant fixtures. The peri-implant soft tissue health was measured immediately before and after six months from overdenture insertion. Results: The peri-implant soft tissue showed a statistically significant increase in probing depth and modified plaque index after six months of overdenture, insertion in the three groups, while the bleeding index of all groups was significantly decreased at the end of this study. Conclusion: three-implants-assisted overdentures maintained the peri-implant soft tissue health compared with two-implants- and single median -implant-assisted overdenture .
