Abstract

Colostomy is a surgical procedure where the normalbowel pass is interrupted with an artificial opening in the colon. Indications include cancer, obstruction, congenital defects, fistula, trauma, stricture, ischemia, thrombosis, and inflammatory disease(De Sousaet al.,2016).Colostomy can be performed on the ascending, transverse, descending or sigmoid colon and can be permanent or temporary (Herawatiand Nasution,2019).Stoma self-care states that patients learn how to manage their stomas independently (Mohamedet al., 2017).By the way self-care is an important part for the adaptation of patients with stomas and healthy behaviors after surgery(Culhaet al., 2016).The aim of this study was; evaluate the effectof developed nursing instructionson self -care for patients with colostomy. The following research hypothesis was formulated:The application of developed nursing instructions will have a positive effect onself-carefor patients with colostomy.Quasi-experimental research design (pre–post test) wasutilizedto conduct this study. To accomplish the aim;data were collected at general surgery departments of Assuit University Hospital. The study included a sample of (30) adult patients of both sex with abdominal operations treated by colostomy. Their age rangedfrom 18-65 years. The following tools were utilized for data collection: Tool (I):Pre-post colostomy knowledge questionnaire, Tool(II):Pre-postobservation checklist for colostomy self-care practicesandTool (III):TheOstomy Self‐Care Index(OSCI).
Summary75The main findings of the present study were:-The mean age of patients was (47.11±11.03)years.morethan half of studied patients were males, the majority of them were marriedand more than one third of them had secondary education. More than half were working,As well as (63.3%) of studied sample were lived in rural regions.-The stoma causeswere colorectal cancerin (50.0%)of the studied patientsand intestinal obstructionwere(20%).Concerningchronic diseases,it wasfound thathalf of the studied patients(50.0%) complained from hypertension.while the majority of them had no family history of colostomy.-There was a highly significantstatisticallydifferenceregardingall items of colostomy knowledge among the studied sample preandpost(immediateand one month)implementation ofcolostomynursing instructions(p<.001**).-There was a highlysignificantstatisticallydifferenceregarding to practice score of stoma carepreandpost(immediate and one month)implementation ofcolostomynursing instructions(p<.001**).-A highly significantstatistically differenceswas found between preandpost(immediate and one month)implementation ofcolostomy nursing instructionsregarding to the total score levels of Ostomy Self Care Index with (p<0.001**).-A significant correlationwas found immediatepost and one monthafterimplementation of colostomy nursing instructionsbetween total knowledgescoreand totalself-care practicesscore (r=0.523, P<0.003and r=0.455, P<0.011 respectively).
