Abstract Aging is a process of progressive loss of physiological integrity. There are many theories that explain aging process. DNA damage, cell senescence and oxidative stress are considered the most accepted mechanisms of aging. DNA damage is a major factor associated with the development and progression of age-related degenerative disorders.DNA damage may affect the expression of a variety of genes involved in the regulation of cell proliferation or inhibit expression of other genes associated with DNA repair.Organisms are often exposed to environmental and internal challenges that cause DNA damage, efficient and accurate DNA repair systems ar crucial for maintaining genome integrity and organism subsistence. For instance, non-homologous end joining and homologous recombination are the two major mechanisms responsible for efficient repair of DNA doublestran breaks(DSBs)which is considered the most harmful type of DNA damage. |
